Could Sheffield United be among clubs keen on 'phenomenal' Spurs teenager Alfie Devine?

Sheffield United will turn attentions to December and then the January window after today’s fixture with Cardiff City is done and dusted.

The Blades can’t go into the break top of the league but a place in the top two is very much on if they can win at Cardiff. Table toppers Burnley and Blackburn play each other tomorrow.

Of course, this a welcome break for United. Injuries have decimated the squad in the opening months of the season and Paul Heckingbottom will hope for good news when December’s fixtures kick off.

However, he must surely have one eye on January. Despite saying he doesn’t expect much business, there is always windows of opportunity. And one of those windows could present itself in the form of Tottenham youngster, Alfie Devine.

Reports from Football Insider this morning claim that Devine is ready to leave on loan in January. EFL clubs are said to be sniffing. And you’d expect, given our record, that United are well aware of Devine.

Sheffield United and Alfie Devine carries risks

There is no doubting that young Devine is a top talent. He’s highly-regarded at Spurs. He featured in the first-team at 16 and Antonio Conte was said to have big plans for him this season. Dubbed a ‘phenomenal‘ talent by Jose Mourinho, there is clearly something there with Devine.

Of course, the Blades will be aware of the midfielder. Having done business with Spurs earlier in the season when Will Lankshear was sold, United will no doubt have cast eyes on Tottenham’s own academy products. Devine, then, is one of their best.

However, while EFL clubs are said to be keen on Devine, a move from United would still come as a surprise. First off, Heckingbottom has said about a lack of business. Secondly, when all midfielders are fit, it’s hard to see where Devine fits in.

The final nail in the coffin here comes in the form of James McAtee. Similar to Devine, he is well-liked by his parent club at Manchester City. But we’ve already seen his is far from the finished article, and you’d suspect United might find similar when it comes to Alfie Devine.

Of course, you never know. Injuries and player sales could dictate things. However, right now, you’d suspect United will be taking more of a watching brief on the Tottenham youngster, rather than readying a bid.
