Sheffield United are among a cluster of teams who are battling it out to sign released Portuguese midfielder, Xeka.
According to TeamTalk, United are one of the clubs keen on Xeka, who has been released by Rennes. Everton, Crystal Palace and Wolves are also named as being keen, as well as clubs in Spain and Italy.
The transfer window is now shut for United are still free to bring free-agents in if they see fit.
Sheffield United interested in signing Xeka
TeamTalk reports how Xeka finds himself without a club after being released by Rennes at the end of his contract this summer.
Xeka, 28, was part of the title winning squad that saw Lille pip PSG in dramatic fashion a few seasons back.

However, he moved on to Rennes, where his career was halted by an ankle injury that required surgery in the winter.
Now back fit and looking to go again, Xeka is wanted by a host of different clubs. United are said to be among the Premier League sides to have shown a ‘strong interest’, while Championship sides Southampton and West Brom are also keen.
United are also thought to be keen on another free-agent, Andre Ayew.
Sheffield United News View: Unlikely signing given the position
We are going to be linked with freebies now, it’s just what happens. But while the signing of Ayew makes a bit of sense given our lack of forwards, signing another midfielder is harder to believe.
United have players who have yet to even play this year in midfield. Tom Davies and Anis Slimane are both vying to get in the team, while James McAtee has also just signed.
Further, Xeka’s surgery and injury will be a slight worry for the club, given the injury problems we already have at Shirecliffe.
This is one to keep an eye on, of course. However, it would be a huge surprise to see us sign another midfielder.
