Loan watch: Did Tyler Smith make the wrong decision in joining Rochdale?

Sheffield United striker, Tyler Smith, is currently enjoying a second loan spell of the season with Rochdale down in League One.

Well, the word enjoying is a term to be used lightly. The Lancashire outfit are struggling in the third tier. They are perilously close to the relegation zone and it’s safe to say things haven’t really worked out for Smith since he made the move.

After scoring four times for three times for Bristol Rovers in the first half of the season and getting regular minutes, Smith opted to move to Spotland in January.

And things started pretty well for Smith in Rochdale. In just his third appearance, the 21-year-old came off the bench to fire in a winning goal against Shrewsbury Town.

However, that goal was all the way back at the start of February. Since then, Smith has failed to register another goal. Furthermore, in the last four games, the Blades youngster hasn’t even got on the pitch. Indeed, for the away clash with Portsmouth, Smith didn’t even make the squad.

All in all, it’s not been the best of loan spells so far for the striker.

Cause for optimism but better needed next season

Smith was one of few young players given the chance to be part of the first-team squad by Chris Wilder at Bramall Lane. Albeit for a single game, Smith was chucked onto the bench as United lost 2-1 at home to West Brom.

Like a lot of young players, some loan spells just don’t work out. It looks like being the case for Smith with this one.

The next move for the striker will be crucial. He’ll be 22 next season so it’s vital he finds the right club where he can try and get in among the minutes and goals.

With chances at Bramall Lane likely to be at a premium, Tyler Smith has a crucial decision ahead of him next season.
